  • The Diocese of Sacramento Welcomes Auxillary Bishop-Designate Cotta!

The appointment was made public Jan. 24 by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States. Bishop-designate Cotta’s episcopal ordination will take place Tuesday, March 25, in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento, on the Feast of the Annunciation of the Lord. Evening prayer will be offered on the Vigil of the Annunciation on Monday, March 24 at St. Clare Church in Roseville.

“I am grateful to His Holiness for giving me a faithful disciple of the Lord Jesus as an able co-worker in this favored part of his vineyard,” said Bishop Jaime Soto. “Bishop-designate Cotta is a son of the Central Valley. He knows our people, he knows our land and mountains, but, most of all, he knows the Lord Jesus and is eager to share the Lord’s wisdom and charity with others.”

Bishop-designate Cotta was introduced at a news conference with Bishop Soto at Sacred Heart School in Sacramento, where he also visited with students in their classrooms. In addition to his duties as auxiliary bishop, he will serve as Vicar General for the Diocese of Sacramento. The new auxiliary bishop speaks English, Portuguese and Spanish.
